Crazy for Milwaukee a la Carte

This weekend only, head on over to the Milwaukee County Zoo for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel a la Carte presented by Meijer. From today, August 17th until Sunday, August 20th “Feast with the Beasts” as you enjoy performances by popular bands, like Rusted Root!

What does it mean to “Feast with the Beasts”? Well, over 25 restaurants from around the Milwaukee are will cook up a variety of food for you to try! While you’re chowing down, head on over to the animal exhibits to say hi to your favorite wild friend. Reid’s Roasted Corn, Rich’s House of Cakes, and Rock Bottom Brewery are joining in on the fun at Milwaukee a la carte this year too!

If you’re feeling creative this weekend, Kohl’s Color Wheels will be at the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm where kids can create their very own art project. You won’t want to miss getting to create a piece inspired by art found in the Milwaukee Art Museum.

For the adults attending Milwaukee a la carte, there will be a wine tent sponsored by Champion Windows & Sunrooms. Here you can enjoy the atmosphere of relaxing sounds from local bands while sipping a glass of wine at the Giraffe Village Wine Tent.

If the food, music, and entertainment options weren’t enough to convince you to come, being able to “go under the skin of nature’s most incredible creatures with BODY WORLDS: ANIMAL INSIDE OUT” sure will! If you don’t have the time to fly to Ireland this weekend, don’t worry because Irish Fest is coming to Milwaukee! From August 17th until the 20th, you can eat tons of Irish-themed food, listen to live Irish music, and enjoy what makes Irish culture so special. On Saturday morning, The Arthritis Foundation’s Run/Walk to the festival will take place along the lakefront. The proceeds from this Run/Walk will support Arthritis Foundation’s search for a cure for “the nation’s most common cause of disability”.  Click here to find out more information, to register, or to donate to the cause!

After you work up an appetite from the 5k, be sure to check out the endless options of Irish themed food. There will be over 45 food locations at the festival, with all the fish and chips, corned beef, and Irish soda bread you can imagine!

There are several ways to save on admission at Irish Fest too! On Thursday, the festival is partnering up with Hope House for school supplies donations in return for FREE admission. If you can’t make it for free admission on Thursday, don’t worry because tickets are just HALF PRICE on Friday, from open to close! All 5k participants will get FREE admission on Saturday until 3 p.m., so don’t miss your chance for that. Lastly on Sunday, there are THREE ways to save! You can:

1) Donate a non-perishable food item by 11 a.m.

2) Bring your valid college student I.D. for a $3 discount

3) Show proof of service for all active military and veterans for FREE admission. Thank you for your service.

It’s Creme Puff Season!

Folks, you no longer have to wait to indulge in all the delicious, fried food you’ve waited a year for! The Wisconsin State Fair begins tomorrow, and you won’t want to miss it. There will be endless food and entertainment options for this year’s fair, including the world famous, Original Creme Puffs.

This year, there are a ton of deals to get into the fair for a discounted price. Today, August 2nd, is the last day to get a free ticket with a purchase of a 30-rack of Miller Lite. Another way to get a free ticket (tomorrow only) is by bringing at least two non perishable food items or by donating to Hunger Task Force to get admission for $2. On Monday, August 7th, adults can get into the fair for $5 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and children get in for free! As a thank you to the men and women who serve our country, veterans and military personnel along with three family members will receive free admission on August 13th. Mark your calendars and take advantage of these discounted days while you can!

You won’t want to miss the Wisconsin State Fair this year, especially with performances by John Mellencamp, Patti Labelle, Allan Jackson with Lee Ann Womack, and more! As always, there will be your favorite rides like the Ferris Wheel, livestock competitions, and plenty of specialty competitions.

Say “Guten Tag” to Germanfest

Whether you’re German or not, you can celebrate German culture at this year’s Germanfest at Henry W. Maier Festival Park (a.k.a. Summerfest grounds). From this Friday, July 28th until Sunday, July 30th, you can stop by to experience a piece of this culture.

This Friday is Military Appreciation Day at Germanfest, so all Active Military and Veterans, along with their families, can get FREE admission. Not many people know this, but you too can save up to $9 if you attend this festival (offer is only available on Friday). There will also be giveaways at the gate, so make sure to arrive early! You’ll also want to follow Germanfest on Facebook to keep up-to-date on all the deals they have going on.

Some of the highlights at this festival include a Germanfest Parade on Saturday night at 4:00pm, fireworks Friday and Saturday night, sponsored by Discovery World, and tons of food. Yes, there will be tons of food at this festival, but you might not know what all of the names mean. Luckily, there’s a cheat sheet on Germanfest’s website to help you out before you go!

Celebration of Aviation

Camping, the US Navy Blue Angels, a concert by the Barenaked Ladies and more! That’s what you can expect at the 25th Annual EAA Airventure event in Oshkosh next week. From July 24th until July 30th, there will endless ways to celebrate the world of aviation.

The celebration kicks off with air shows and a concert opening day, performed by the Barenaked Ladies who are known for their hit, “One Week”.  The lead singer of the band, Ed Robertson, is now a pilot who has had connections to aviation since he was a child. According to the EAA Airventure website, the singer is thrilled to be able to “combine his passions of flying and music”.

Not only will there be a performance by the Barenaked Ladies, but an airshow will be performed by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. There will also be a chance to get an autograph by the Blue Angels on July 28th, so mark your calendar!

Another unforgettable memory you and your family could make would be to camp out at EAA’s Camp Scholler in aircraft camping. It’s Amore at Festa Italiana

This year, Festa Italiana is celebrating it’s 40th year in sharing all the wonderful aspects of Italian culture with the Milwaukee community. The event will take place this weekend, July 21st until July 23rd at the Summerfest grounds. If you get your ticket before Thursday, it’s only $10 each!

You will LOVE the attractions and events they have at this year’s festival. All weekend long, take Gondola rides to “spark a little love”! Taking a gondola ride at Festa Italiana is the best way to relax after walking around the festival or to get a prime spot for fireworks. You don’t have to be on a gondola to enjoy the nightly fireworks, but it sure is a great place to view them!

One of the most talked about attractions at Festa Italiana is the Festa Mass and Procession that will take place on Sunday, July 23rd. The Mass will begin at 11 am and it marks 50 years after Our Lady of Pompeii Church in the Old Third Ward was destroyed. This Mass is in the Amphitheater area is free until 1 pm, and the grounds open after mass concludes.

Get Ready for Bastille Days

If you love French cuisine, live music, and a 43-foot tall Eiffel Tower replica, the Bastille Days celebration is the place for you! This year, Cathedral Square Park is throwing its 36 Year Anniversary of Bastille Days from July 13th until July 16th. The event runs from 11 a.m. until the late evening each day. Check the Bastille Days celebration website for more details!

To kick off the event, the ‘Storm the Bastille 5K run’ will begin at 9 p.m. for over 5,000 runners and walkers. The race will go through East Town and into the Third Ward. The following night, one of the most exciting parts of the Bastille Days celebration, the Mardi Gras parade, will be going on. The parade will take place on Friday at 8:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. down ‘Main Street’ (Kilbourn Ave).

This year, over 250,000 visitors will get to experience live music across four stages. There will also be a decadent international marketplace where you can take home a piece of French cuisine. If you would rather leave the cooking to professionals, chef and wine demos will be going on all weekend. These chefs will be cooking up French and Cajun cuisine for you to try, and you won’t want to miss it.
